Speech Title: 2D Energy Nanomaterials at atomic scale
Abstract: Technology at the nanoscale has become one of the main challenges in science as new physical effects appear and can be modulated at will. Especially 2D nanomaterials can be designed and engineered in order to improve their performance and efficiency for energy and environmental applications. In this way, a proper selection of defects, grain boundaries and surfaces, or the right selection of dopants allow a major increase on the properties of a new generation of (photo)electrocatalysts.
In the present work, by using powerful advanced electron microscopy related techniques, we will move to the atomic scale in order to visualize the beauty of such nanostructures. Modified graphene-like nanostructures as support for single atom catalysts with a great enhancement on lithium-sulfur batteries stability and performance will be shown [1]. Nanoengineered atom-thin transition metal dichalcogenides (MoS2 and WS2) showing a high density of grain boundaries acting as efficient active sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) will be also studied at the atomic scale [2]. Atomic resolution electron microscopy analyses will help us to visualize such fancy nanostructures and allow us to create 3D atomic models in order to understand not only the growth mechanisms implied, but also to be used as input models for further DFT simulations, which will allow us to gain knowledge on the novel catalytic mechanisms achieved.
The latest results obtained by my group on direct visualization and modeling nanomaterials at atomic scale will help to understand their growth mechanisms (sometimes complex) and also correlate their physical properties ((photo)electrocatalytic) at sub-nanometer with their atomic scale structure.

Speech Title: Energy - Water - Environment Nexus Technology: Towards climate Adaptation and Ecosystem Restoration
Abstract: The UN Atlas of the Oceans shows that over forty percent of the world's population lives within 150 km of a coastline, and population growth and tourism are accelerating in coastal regions, they are surrounded by untapped water resources and received energy from land-based infrastructures. Water covers the large part of our planet; the content and dynamics of water provide primary natural resources for living including production of energy. There is growing quest for the use of reliable technology for energy generation in coastal and island inhabitant, the technology development deals with dynamic changing of physiochemical, ecological and harsh metocean environment, beside other generic cost and efficiency factors associated with sustainable alternative energy. The transportation sector is one of the largest sector that contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, air pollution from large volume of ships plying the ocean and sea continue to have increase GHG emission. Biofuel represent the best choice of renewable energy for mobility industries. The transportation industry and renewable energy goal require large sustainable supply of diverse biomass feedstocks to power energy plants. Macroalgae is a potential contributor towards this goal. This resource would be grown in marine waters and would not compete with existing land-based energy crops. This module presents the marine and ocean energy towards carbon neutral society goal, current climate change control retrofit and hybrid technology for current ships to control emission until standalone renewable energy can be used, the opportunity for the use of farmed seaweed as biofuel feed stocks for mobility industries and the use integrated water-energy environment nexus technology approach for sustainable use of water resources.
